The tiny village of Carrington is now in the Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester, but historically it was part of Cheshire and was the site of Carrington Power Station. However, back in the middle of the 19th century the village held its own races. Today the area has a greater association with a different sport, for it is the training ground of Manchester United. The only recorded meeting at the racecourse took place on Friday 1st April 1842 when the principal event was a Sweepstake which attracted a field of 12. After a keenly fought contest the victor was Mr Alexander’s Vanquish by three-quarters of a length from Uncle Ben. |
